Each of you will pull what you feel is the most significant quotation in chapter two in terms of revealing a specific tone or mood. Post that quotation with a proper MLA citation, and provide your rationale as to what tone/mood is created and how.

  1. I think that one of the most important quotes in chapter 2 is when Piggy says "You got your small fire all right." I think this because it is showing that Piggy is starting to lose it and he can't take them being mean to him anymore.

  2. While there are many interesting quotes in chapter 2, Piggy’s remark, “How can you expect to be rescued if you don't put first things first and act proper?” (Golding, 45) expresses the overall chaotic mood of the make-shift society. Rather than taking a moment to logically decide the best course of action, the collective dives into a frenzy of feeding a large fire beacon which proves to be more harm than good. Piggy represents the logical side of humans as denoted by his stereotypical thick glasses so he responds to the chaos with a plea for order. Ironically, chaos follows his speech about order which indicates that complete order is no longer possible. Also, the boys’ attempts at signaling the outside world shows they still view their situation as temporary although all evidence points to the contrary.

  3. In chapter two of Lord Of the Flies, Piggy says a very interesting quote to show the mood of survival of the fittest. Piggy says "How can you expect to be rescued if you don't put first things first and act proper?" (Golding, 45). I thought this was an inportant quote in chapter two because it shows that everyone has the same goal, just different ways to reach this goal. Piggy thinks that their first course of action should be too build shelters down by the beach. On the otherhand, Ralph thinks that they should elect a cheif to make decisions. They both had every intention of trying to get saved from the island, but they had different ways to achieve this goal. In conclusion, the quote said by Piggy supports the mood of survival of the fittest.

  4. "We want to have fun. And we want to be rescued." (golding 37)
The mood is how everything is carefree and will be alright.

  5. Ralph tries to calm down his followers by saying that "My father's in the Navy, He said there aren't any unknown islands left. He says...So you see, sooner or later, we shall get rescued." (Golding, 37). He is attempting to build a hopeful mood, by making it seem undeniable that the group of boys will be rescued. This assertion came right after the boy's spirits were getting low, for they had been discussing the "beastie" and were starting to get fearful. Jack is doing what a good leader should do, making the mood more cheerful by instilling a sense of hope.

  6. The most significant quote from Chapter Two is when Piggy repeatedly says "I got the conch"(Goldberg, 42). This quote is significant because is exemplifies how Piggy relies on the conch so he can be heard among the other kids. However, since all of the kids undermine him because of his appearance and name, they don't listen to him anyways. Everyone just tells him to shut up or just ignore him. This can also be foreshadowing in upcoming events. This event can be a warning from Goldberg that sooner or later there will be kids who will rebel and ignore the chief, Ralph.

  7. Jack says that he agrees with Ralph in that the boys on th eisland must "have rules and obey them [because] after all [they are] not savages [and they are] English, and the English are best at everything. So [they've] got to do the right things" (Golding, 42). This quote is of great importance in this chapter becuase it conveys the thin line between civil living and compete savagery. Since they are english, they are considered to be the pinacle of civilty and they must show that. A theme that can be drawn is that even though they are Englisg, they are trapped on an island and emotions and perspective change but yet they need to maintain their proper civilty and abide by all rules that they initiate. Conclusively, there is a fine line between civil and savage behavior and even the high English class can be onyl steps away from brutalty when it comes to being stranded on an island.

  8. Min, that is a good idea about the foreshadowing, i agree with you on that

  9. I think that the most important quote in chapter2 is "I've been watching the sea. There hasn't been a trace of a ship. Perhaps we'll never be rescued."(Golding, 43). This shows how their childish behavior has suddenly come to an abrupt halt as the realization dawns on them. Ralph, of course, blows this concern off and the murmurs of the other boys, possibly in a way of hiding his own fear that he and these other boys could be stranded on the island indefinitely.

  10. I agree with rhino boy about the "thin line" between civil living and complete savagery.

  12. There are two important quotations from Piggy that stand out in chapter 2. Between "I got the conch!" (Golding, 45) and "How can you expect to be rescued if you don't put first things first and act proper?" (Golding, 45), the former reveals a stronger tone and mood. There is prejudice towards Piggy because of his poor conditions of health and appearance, but his desperation is emphasized as the easily bullied boy manages to speak up.

  13. The quote,"we ought to have a meeting"(Golding,11), sets the stage for character development within the chapter. This is a vital THing due to the fact that if there's no character development throughout the story then the book has no value as a work of literature. This statement sets the characters as those who come from a society of values and strict order. The desire to hold a meaning shows the above values are presented in the child's sense of existence.for, without strict rigorous discipline the child would not be able to function as a rational being that is capable of learning. This so-called framework for the collective conscious of the children rooted in a particular society can give the reader a comparison of the personality developed further on in the book, and the contrasts between the two would be the development. This development is what's vital to the beginning chapter and for further understanding throughout the book.

i'd really like feedback and constructive criticism because i think my development of showing the importance of character development and how it ties into the quote, thus making it the more important quotes is still weak. i also Think other parts of my comment are lacking strong structure and flow

  19. In chapter 2, Golding writes, "Once more, amid the breeze, the shouting, the slanting sunlight on the high mountain, was shed that glamour, that strange invisible light of friendship, adventure, and content." This expresses the moods of friendliness and contentment. The boys on the island are bonded together by their common circumstances whether they like it or not, and the bonds are deepened by working together with each other. The boys are satisfied with the work they've done, and are "joined in an effort by the burden" of carrying a log up a hill. They are working together as friends, and are happy doing so. This passage expresses the moods of contentment and friendship between some of the boys on the island.

  20. Um, correct me if I'm wrong, but was it not frowned upon to say things like 'that was the dumbest blog i've ever read'?
I'm just trying to clarify the integrity of this activity.

  21. In chapter two Piggy makes a particular comment that makes everyone realise what needs to be done and how should they act if they want to be rescued. He says "How can you expect to be rescued if you don't put first things first and act proper?"(Golding,45) which brings about the very serious tone of the situation that they are in. This quotation establishes the tone because after this quote being heard, everyone then realises that making quick decisions about an idea before the idea is explained is not going to get them very far in terms of trying to be rescued. They experience the bitterness of reality, they learn the rules of karma, and for their child-like behavior, they experience the seriousness of the situation.

  23. The most significant quote from chapter 2 is when Piggy says to everyone, “How can you expect to be rescued if you don't put first things first and act proper?” (Golding, 45). This shows that organization and leadership are going to play a large role in the success of this group of kids on the island. Piggy is attempting to create order and understanding throughout everyone, but they aren't making it easy. It shows however, that there is one thing everyone on that island has in common. They all want to be rescued. The issue now is how they can accomplish that. There is disagreement and chaos amongst the kids and they have to try and figure out a way to work together to be successful.

  24. So far, as to the children’s knowledge, they are the only inhabitants of the island. Even though they are all children, they understand what is needed to stabilize a society. Jack tries to provide order, and create a more hopeful mood by saying, “We've got to have rules and obey them. After all, we're not savages. We're English, and the English are best at everything.” (Golding, 42) Jack intends to raise the other kid’s hopes of surviving on this island for as long as they are still stranded there. Jack and Ralph are still quite young, but they are looking over these other children, and trying to assure them that they can maintain the structure of society that they are used to. By creating these rules, and saying “the English are best at everything”, Jack and Ralph hope to regain a positive mood among the others.

  25. Each one of you pay attention: you have one more chance at this blog. Do not post ANYTHING that does not have to do with the question or this class. It does not matter who is who. Anonymity should be respected. I made myself EXTREMELY clear that by no means should any of you poke fun at anyone else, or use choice language. If you don't have something constructive to add, then do not post anything at all. Remember that you are putting everything in writing. Should you chose to use a pseudoname, tomorrow I will collect a list from you for grading purposes and apparently now discipline purposes since it seems this class is the only class lacking maturity.
